The four girls were in the church restroom, getting ready for the service, when a dynamite blast rocked the building, and the walls fell in on the girls. Although racial bombings were so frequent in Birmingham that it was called “Bombingham”, this was the first time anyone had been killed. This tragic event helped guarantee the passage of the 1963 civil rights legislature. Illus. with photos.
