This book was somewhat disappointing compared to the movie. The chapters are like individual stories and seem rather disconnected. The author should have spent some time showing the transitioning of time because the reader was curious at the end to find out so many years had passed by. While I would not recommend the book, the movie is wonderful.

Their strong Christian beliefs are frequently expressed rather than just being background information. If you are interested in the Quaker religion this may be a good way to understand their belief system as it is woven into the stories. If however, you dislike constant references to Christianity this book is not for you.

This is a wonderful book! It is very hard to put down.
It is written as a series of related vignettes about a Quaker family in middle to late 19th century Indiana.
The book is full of wisdom and thoughtful regard to life. It is evocative of an era of simpler times, but still very relevant to people of today.
The main characters are fully drawn and unforgettable.
The writing is beautifully descriptive and the reader is compelled to read and reread passages of particularly beautiful description as well as the writer's gentle, but thoughtful wisdom.

If you are not aware of the Movie based on the book and named "Friendly Persuasion" starring Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire, you would be well rewarded to make the effort to view it. It is mostly faithful to the novel though not as fully developed.
