Interest level: ages 5-9. In this 1947 classic a father regales his inventive and demanding 5-year-old son with bed-time tales of a fierce wolf, the hen he wanted to eat, and the farmer who wanted to shoot the wolf. Interruptions by the enthusiastic listener add to the fun, as do the cleverly scratchy illustrations.

Terrifically appealing, a real find. Captures perfectly the interactions between a dad and a five-year-old as they collaborate in telling a bedtime story. Also depicts the relaxed fun of a dad and son spending time together. It's set in New York City, so there are brief references to local places. Great dialogue, fun for reading aloud.
