There was a lot going on in this book. According to the Library of Congress, this book is about "psychic ability, the supernatural, blessing and cursing, death, gays, farm life, and Ohio." While reading this book, I sometimes felt like I was reading Holes, which had a similar plot based on old family curses. I was somewhat disappointed by this book. The characters felt flat, especially the brother Toby, who is either asleep or confused throughout almost all of this book. The magic in this book felt unsatisfying to me, and the main character has so many magical dreams/visions/immersive hallucinations that it made me sleepy.
