In this tender board book, a kitten practices the basics of feline behavior over the course of a day. A single word of text per spread teaches readers "how to be a cat"-how to stretch, clean, pounce, feast-while the striking paper cuts illustrate the kitten's attempts to imitate an adult cat's mastery of each skill. At times, the kitten triumphantly succeeds, and at other times the kitten struggles, in vignettes that range from whimsical to profound. A celebration of all things feline,How to Be a Catalso tells a universal story of mastering life skills, and of the loving relationship between parent and child.

Too simple; there’s only one word on each page.

My two year old adores this book, so much that we purchased it after borrowing it from the library. The drawings are nice to look at and the single words in here seem to be encouraging him to try and read and spell more than others. We will be trying Apple next.

A beautifully illustrated book of cat behaviors. Fun to read with toodlers but have you cat actions worked out ahead of time as they want to try the benaviors.

In this beautifully simple and visually striking book, a tiny kitten observes an adult cat to learn how to stretch, clean, listen, hunt, pounce, and feast, as well as other essential cat behaviours. The spare, dynamic cut-paper illustrations "miraculously evoke the frisky, fluid physicality of feline movement" (Kirkus Reviews), and the playful kitten's eagerness to learn will resonate with children and invite repeat readings. With just a single word per page, How to Be a Cat is a great pick for beginning readers, but will delight readers of all ages.
