Unexpectedly well made movie permitted by capitalistic studio. Cinematography sets the warm (reds) romantic nostalgic tragic mood.
Acting is perfect. A classic, but witnesses setup is unique even in modern genre.

Co-written, produced and directed by Warren Beatty in 1981, this American docudrama depicts the the life and career of John Reed, the journalist and writer who chronicled the Russian Revolution in his book "Ten Days That Shook the World".
The film forcuses on his love affair with Louise Bryant, a married socialite who gets intrigued with his idealism.
The couple find their passion rekindled as they get swept up in the fall of Russia's Czarist regime and the events of the 1917 Revolution.
It turns out to be such an epic coaster-riding love story during the tumultuous revolutionay commotion.
Gripping and extraordinary entertaining piece!

GREAT 1981 film co-written, produced, and directed by Warren Beatty. Warren is excellent in his role as John Reed, but Diane Keaton totally mesmerized me in her role as Louise - I hadn't previously realized what a talented actress she is.

I'm not politically a rightie or leftie and did find the film's rendering of the politics of the time to be pretty straight up and generally educational.

What a history lesson (that'll really sell it) to all those who believe, the DEM's /REP's gave us the 40 hour week, eight hour day, health insurance, guaranteed income. Nope. It was the Commies. Warren Beatty got and deserved the Oscar for directing but lost the picture award to Chariots Of Fire, a movie no one watches today. I'm pretty sure no movie made in America after Reds had an intermission. The interspersing of "witnesses", people living at the time of Jack Reed, is particularly fascinating.

The film is now on my top 50; and may move up. The cast, the camera, the honesty of the witnesses. I am excited and look forward to the new Warren Beatty film later this year.

As a Russian, I was curious to see how an American film crew would depict the Russian revolution. Since this is considered a classic, I expected quite a bit from it, but my expectations fell flat. The story about the American journalist is interesting, but I found the account about historical events lacking. There are few Russian characters and voices in this film. It disappointed me a bit that the film glorifies the feats of one individual, but skims over the historical context that is responsible for his claim to fame.

There is not a frame in this movie that is not fully realized. A Perfect movie (imho). Beatty spent a decade working on this masterpiece. He got the best of the best for acting talent and received a well deserved oscar for Best Director (Should have won best picture too) some may find fault with the depiction of the Russian revolution or the old left but i let the witnesses tell me since they were really there and Beatty made sure to get the story from them as well as his own hard research. Loved Maureen Stapleton as Emma "goldburg" .. Goldman! ;)

Great movie. Was nice to see Diane Keaton when she was younger and her and Warren Beatty were great in it.

This is is awful ! ...when I got this home and put this movie in the DVD says: NOT FORMATTED FOR THIS REGION !!?? I have watched thousands of other New York Public Library DVDs on my Panasonic Region 1 DVD Player,.. but this one makes it a DOZEN that have come up as NOT FORMATTED etc. ! I really wanted to see this one. WHY is the New York Public Library buying DVD's that are NOT FORMATTED to be viewed in this region ? And why does the New York Public Library's Purchasing Department continue to not respond to repeated e-mails sent to them about this problem ?? Has this happened to anyone else out there ?
