DCI Gently (Martin Shaw) and DS Bacchus (Lee Ingleby), having been seriously injured in the line of duty in series 5 react differently to the reality of facing rehabilitation. Gently plods on in his hard-boiled, grumpy manner, while Bacchus is ready to hang up his shield. Gently, of course convinces John to persevere, and the series plays up their "father/ son" relationship which really makes this series grow on you. Series 6 also plays up the eminently British historical nature of this show with episodes about foul-play occurring in a mine setting, English holiday camps of the 60's, and hearkening back to WW II, when Gently served among the troops. As well as solving crimes, George has to stave the establishment which is looking to "bump him up to a higher level desk job",the first step to retiring him. Against all odds, Gently just keeps on getting the bad guy!
